What Is a Tub-to-Shower Conversion, and Is It Right for You?
A tub-to-shower conversion removes an old bathtub and replaces it with a walk-in shower, usually in the same footprint. It’s one of the most popular updates we do, because it makes daily bathing safer and easier without a full remodel.
- Who a Tub-to-Shower Conversion Is Right For
It’s a good fit if you can’t get in and out of the bathtub comfortably, if the tub wall feels too high to step over safely, or if a tub you never use is taking up space. Stepping over a tub wall is one of the most common places older adults fall. The CDC found that bathroom injury rates climb sharply with age, and that falls cause the large majority of those injuries. A low-entry shower removes that daily hurdle.
- The Benefits
A low-threshold shower is easier and safer to step into, easier to clean, and it updates the look of the whole bathroom. Add a bench, grab bars, and a non-slip floor, and you get a space that supports comfort and independence for years. If you’d rather keep a tub for bathing, ask about a Walk-In Tubs instead.
- How to Reach Us
Our Tub-to-Shower Conversion Process
- Remove the Old Tub
On your scheduled date, our in-house crew removes the old tub and surround and hauls away the debris. No subcontractors, so the same team is with you from start to finish.
- Prep and Waterproof
We inspect what’s behind the walls, make any repairs, and waterproof the area before anything goes in. Because we hold a master plumber license, we can relocate the drain if the new shower layout calls for it.
- Install Your New Shower
We install your chosen wall system, base, fixtures, and any safety features. Our nonporous panels go in without grout lines, so there’s nothing to scrub later.
- Final Walkthrough
We review the finished shower with you, check every detail, and go over the warranty on your materials and fixtures.
Tub-to-Shower Options & Features
- Low-Threshold and Barrier-Free Entry
Choose a low-threshold curb for an easy step-in, or a curbless, barrier-free entry for the most accessible option. We size the opening to your bathroom and how you move.
- Safety Features
Add grab bars, a built-in or fold-down bench, a handheld shower head, and a non-slip floor. These make daily bathing safer without making the bathroom look clinical.
- Wall Materials and Colors
Pick from nonporous acrylic, crushed stone, or tile, all in more than 30 colors. You’ll see your choice in a 3D design first. Compare them on our Materials & Lifetime Warranty page. Prefer an open, curbless shower? See Walk-In Showers.
Why Choose Us
- Premium Nonporous Walls
Our Sentrel acrylic is about twice as thick as standard acrylic and won’t yellow, crack, or fade, and our Up Home crushed-stone panels are a half-inch thick with veining that runs through the material. Both are nonporous, mold-resistant, and grout-free.
- Licensed Crews and a Lifetime Warranty
We’re a licensed general contractor (ROC 365652) and master plumber (ROC 367067), bonded and insured, with in-house crews and about 50 years of combined experience. Selected acrylic, crushed-stone, and fixture products carry a true lifetime warranty we service locally. This conversion is part of our full Bathroom Remodeling services.
Tub-to-Shower Conversion Cost Factors & Timeline
- What Affects the Cost
The main drivers are the size of the space, the wall material and features you choose, and whether we need to relocate the drain or plumbing. Rather than quote a number sight unseen, we measure your bathroom and give you a clear written price up front, with no change orders after demolition.
- How Long It Takes
Most tub-to-shower conversions finish in one to two days once installation starts, depending on the condition of the space and the materials. After we measure, we’ll give you a realistic schedule. Book a free in-home consultation for your exact written price.

How long does a bathroom remodel take?
What affects the cost of a tub-to-shower conversion?
The size of the space, the wall material and safety features you choose, and whether the drain or plumbing needs to move. We don’t quote sight unseen. After we measure your bathroom, you get a clear written price up front with no change orders after demolition.
Can you convert a tub to a shower in one day?
Many straightforward conversions finish in about a day once installation starts, and most are done within two. The timeline depends on the condition behind the walls and the materials you pick. We’ll give you a realistic schedule after we measure your space.
Is a tub-to-shower conversion worth it?
For many homeowners, yes. It removes the daily hurdle of stepping over a tub wall, makes bathing safer, cuts cleaning time with grout-free walls, and updates the room. If mobility or safety is a concern, it’s one of the highest-value updates you can make.
Does removing a bathtub hurt resale value?
It can if it leaves the home with no tub at all, since some buyers with young children want one. If you have another tub elsewhere in the house, converting a rarely used one is usually fine. We’re happy to talk through what makes sense for your home.
Do you need to move the plumbing for a tub-to-shower conversion?
Sometimes. A shower drain often sits differently than a tub drain, so relocation may be needed. Because we hold a master plumber license (ROC 367067), our own team handles that work, so you won’t need to hire a separate plumber.
