What Is a Walk-In Shower, and Is It Right for You?
A walk-in shower is an open, low-threshold shower you step into without climbing over a tub wall or a high curb. It’s a strong choice whether you’re upgrading for comfort, safety, or just a fresh look.
- Who a Walk-In Shower Is Right For
It fits homeowners with an outdated shower stall, a cracked or leaking pan, or a tub they’d rather replace with something easier to use. It’s also one of the best updates for aging in place. In a 2024 AARP survey, 75% of adults 50 and older said they want to stay in their homes as they age, and most who plan to expect to add bathroom modifications like grab bars and no-slip surfaces. A walk-in shower is one of the most effective of those changes.
- Walk-In Shower or Shower Replacement?
If your current shower works but looks tired or the pan is cracked, a straight shower replacement swaps the walls, base, and fixtures without changing the layout. If you want to open the space or lower the entry, a full walk-in shower is the way to go. We do both, and we’ll tell you honestly which fits your bathroom. Replacing a tub instead? See Tub-to-Shower Conversions.
- How to Reach Us
Our Walk-In Shower & Shower Replacement Process
- Remove the Old Shower or Tub
Our in-house crew removes the old stall, pan, or tub and hauls away the debris. The same team is with you from start to finish, no subcontractors.
- Prep and Waterproof
We inspect behind the walls, make repairs, set a new shower base or pan, and waterproof the area. As a master plumber, we handle any drain or valve work the new layout needs.
- Install Your New Walk-In Shower
We install your wall system, glass, fixtures, and safety features. Nonporous panels go in without grout lines, so there’s nothing to scrub later.
- Final Walkthrough
We review the finished shower with you, check the details, and go over the warranty on your materials and fixtures.
Walk-In Shower Options & Features
- Bench or Seat and Low-Threshold Entry
Add a built-in or fold-down bench or seat for comfort and safety, and choose a low-threshold curb for an easy step-in. Grab bars and a non-slip floor round out a shower that’s easier to use every day.
- Doorless and Glass Options
Prefer an open, doorless shower for a clean, roomy feel, or a frameless glass enclosure to keep water in? We measure and install both. For glass doors and enclosures on their own, see Shower Doors. For a fully curbless, roll-in shower, see Accessible Bathrooms.
- Wall Materials, Tile, and Colors
Choose nonporous acrylic, crushed stone, or a fully custom tiled shower, all in more than 30 colors. Panels are grout-free and easy to clean; tile gives the most custom look but needs grout upkeep. Compare them on our Materials & Lifetime Warranty page.
Why Choose Us
- Premium Nonporous Walls
Our Sentrel acrylic is about twice as thick as standard acrylic and won’t yellow, crack, or fade, and our Up Home crushed-stone panels are a half-inch thick with veining that runs through the material. Both are nonporous, mold-resistant, and grout-free.
- Licensed Crews and a Lifetime Warranty
We’re a licensed general contractor (ROC 365652) and master plumber (ROC 367067), bonded and insured, with in-house crews and about 50 years of combined experience. Selected acrylic, crushed-stone, and fixture products carry a true lifetime warranty we service locally. This is part of our full Bathroom Remodeling services.
Walk-In Shower Cost Factors & Timeline
- What Affects the Cost
The main drivers are the size of the shower, the wall material and glass you choose, the features you add, and whether the pan or plumbing needs to move. We measure your bathroom and give you a clear written price up front, with no change orders after demolition.
- How Long It Takes
Most walk-in shower installations and shower replacements finish in one to two days once work starts, depending on the space and materials. After we measure, we’ll give you a realistic schedule. Book a free in-home consultation for your exact written price.
